Set up in 1986, its functions regard: the protection of biodiversity, ecosystems and marine and coastal resources, the safeguarding of land and waters, policies to combat climate change and global warming, sustainable development, energy efficiency and the circular economy, integrated management of the waste cycle, decontamination of sites of national interest, environmental assessment of strategic works, combatting air, noise and electromagnetic pollution and the risks deriving from chemicals and genetically modified organisms.

It plays a guiding and supervisory role in the activities of the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and of the national parks and marine protected areas. It promotes good environmental practices, sustainable mobility and urban regeneration based on sustainability criteria, and takes care of promoting environmental education in schools.

It carries out intense activity in international encounters, and plays a central role in managing funds provided through EU programmes.

The Ministry is aided by the Port Authorities, the Coast Guard and the Command Unit for Forestry, Environmental and Agri-food Protection (CUTFAA) of the Carabinieri police force.
