The General Custody of the Sacred Convent is a religious organisation of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. The stable community of friars takes care of the monumental complex of the Sacred Convent and Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.
The religious community of the sacred convent comprises more than fifty friars and fifteen novices. It belongs to the ancient Order of Friars Minor Conventual, who live their lives according to the rule of St. Francis. The black or grey colour of their habit distinguishes this Franciscan order from the other orders, and the various shades of grey and black represent the different origins of the members of the community.
The Sacred Convent, defined Caput et Mater (Head and Mother) of the order, brings together friars attracted from all over the world to the very place where the Franciscan charism originated and where St. Francis’s mortal remains were laid to rest.
The fact that the friars have such diverse origins not only offers the opportunity for a unique experience of brotherhood, but also allows the community to welcome pilgrims and tourists of a wide variety of ethnic groups, and to accompany them in prayer and on their visit to the monumental complex.
